“This piece has survived the ages. It had been sleeping for 20 years, hanging from a chapel framework, before I brought it out of its torpor. While dusting it, the engraving of the name of its former owner appeared. But its singularity, in my eyes, resides especially in the projecting wood assembly which allowed to raise the upper seat in order to kneel.“

“Cette pièce a traversé les âges. Elle dormait depuis 20 ans, suspendue à la charpente d'une chapelle, avant que je la sorte de sa torpeur. En la dépoussiérant, la gravure du nom de son ancienne propriétaire est apparue. Mais sa singularité, à mes yeux, réside surtout dans l'assemblage de bois saillant qui permettait de relever l'assise supérieure afin de s'agenouiller.“

PORTRAIT
Lena Morelli trained as a seating upholsterer at the Ecole des métiers d'arts d'Uzès, after a few years in construction engineering working on the reuse of materials in architecture and the design world. Working with her hands, as close as possible to the material, had become too imperious, and we can only salute this obviousness which imposes itself to our eyes.
Today, she revisits antique pieces, marked and patinated, associated with Danish rope: a natural paper rope, supple, elegant, lightly treated with wax to strengthen it, and which becomes very resistant once woven.
Each finished piece is the result of a long but intuitive process; "when I weave, my hands enter into a dialogue with the structure and materiality of the chosen object": making, unmaking, remaking acts as a revealer of narrative wefts.
Her artistic research is nourished by traditional techniques, with strong Scandinavian, Japanese and Mediterranean inspirations. She thus creates unique, hybrid and characterful chairs.

Lena Morelli s’est formée au métier de tapissier en siège à l’Ecole des métiers d’arts d’Uzès, après quelques années en ingénierie de la construction à travailler sur le réemploi de matériaux en architecture et dans le monde du design. Travailler de ses mains, au plus près de la matière était devenu trop impérieux, et l’on ne peut que saluer cette évidence qui s’impose à notre regard.
Elle revisite aujourd’hui des pièces anciennes, marquées et patinées, associées à la corde danoise : une corde de papier naturelle, souple, élégante, légèrement traitée à la cire pour la renforcer, et qui devient très résistante une fois tissée.
Chaque pièce achevée est le fruit d’un processus long mais intuitif ; “ lorsque je tisse, mes mains entrent en dialogue avec la structure et la matérialité de l’objet choisi “ : faire, défaire, refaire agit en révélateur de trames narratives.
Sa recherche artistique se nourrit de techniques traditionnelles, fortes d’inspirations scandinave, japonaise et méditerranéenne. Il en résulte des assises de caractère, hybrides, uniques.

“ The time is ripe for thoughtful purchasing, recycling, reusing, meticulous repairs, and artisanal techniques to bring objects back to life. From then on, repair is no longer hidden but is seen, asserted and imposed as a pretext to stand out. The imperfections become distinctive signs, the cracks are sublimated, the yokes of fabrics accumulate to form a unique patchwork...
To celebrate this burgeoning art form, Merci imagines for the first time a global exhibition mixing home and fashion. With "Fixing things", second-hand fabrics are transformed into contemporary clothing, vintage pieces are up-cycled, furniture is made from eco-responsible materials. ”

“ L’époque est à l’achat réfléchi, au recyclage, au réemploi, aux réparations minutieuses, aux techniques artisanales pour redonner vie à des objets. Dès lors, la réparation ne se cache plus mais se voit, s’affirme, s’impose comme un prétexte pour se démarquer. Les imperfections deviennent des signes distinctifs, les fissures sont sublimées, les empiècements de tissus s’accumulent pour former un patchwork unique…
Pour célébrer cet art en plein essor, Merci imagine pour la première fois une exposition globale, mêlant la maison et la mode. Avec « Réparer les choses », les tissus de seconde main se transforment en vêtements contemporains, les pièces vintage sont upcyclées, le mobilier est fabriqué à partir de matériaux éco-responsables. ”
