about
Makoto Asebi grew up in Sapporo, on Hokkaido steep island, with long, harsh winters. He now lives and works in Kamakura, a seaside town bordered by the ocean, in the south of Tokyo. From the mountains to the coast, he memorized the variety of landscapes, the violence of the cold and warm seasons; he combined a strong cultural past : a rocky childhood, then a life in the middle of Zen Buddhist temples and Shinto sanctuaries. Today, Makoto Asebi's house/workshop reflects the charm of a simple and peaceful life in symbiosis with nature, earth and elements. From this experienced cultural multiplicity and from this plural vision of the world, Makoto Asebi has chosen to express unity and to tell ancestral bases with generosity and simplicity. His work is based on sincerity, authenticity and humility. His pieces are blank pages seeking to fade behind the food arranged or the beverage poured. Makoto Asebi's palette includes a wide variety of whites : transfiguration symbols and representing the sum of all colors. There is something monastic, ascetic in Makoto Asebi's work which takes us far from the noise of the world.
