about

Lives and works in Okayama, Japan

Kan Ito was born in Fukuoka into a potter's family. As a child, he was strongly influenced by his uncle, a designer, and was considering a career in design or graphic design. But he nevertheless followed the path of his father Hitoshi Tachibana, a renowned ceramic artist.

After completing his studies at Osaka Art University, he became Yamada Hikaru's apprentice in Kyoto. He then joined the family business in Fukuoka where he worked until his own kiln was established in Kanagawa in 2006. After the earthquake of 2011, he settled in Okayama Prefecture. The landscape is rural and soothing. The river goes along the workshop.

Very quickly his style asserts itself, rigorous, sober and almost ascetic. Passionate about architecture and history, Kan Ito searches the archives, immerses himself in the art of ancient civilizations to incorporate classical forms into his own work. He thus reactivates an ancestral craftsmanship.

His works were offered for a special pop-up restaurant project by Noma at the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo in 2015.
